Here, Kitty, Kitty! Cat Cake Tutorial

Cook with @cake-lady-jen ...

The photos here show me making a mini cat cake, but the principles are the same for making a larger single tier cake, or cupcakes.

You can either cover your cakes in fondant or buttercream, depending on your preference. I personally think buttercream has a nicer taste, but you do get a good finish with fondant.

This buttercream recipe gives a good consistency for covering and piping:

You will need:

· Cake or cupcakes covered with fondant or buttercream
· Buttercream (for the collar)
· Piping bag with a star tip (any type)
· Fondant (for the ears)
· Pink colouring
· Edible gold paint
· Edible glue

Method:

Firstly, make the ears.
If you have a petal cutter, use it! Cut out a petal shape and then squeeze in the rounded end slightly to give the ears shape, and set aside to dry. If you don’t have a specific cutter, cut out triangles and then set aside to dry in a cup or bowl so they become slightly curved.

Paint the inner ears pink and leave to dry.

Colour the buttercream pink, and put into a piping bag with a star nozzle - use any type of star nozzle you have; you will get a good effect.

Now you should have everything ready to assemble.

TOP TIP: Decide where you want the face to be before you begin assembly – do you want the face to be on top of the cake of on the side? Choose now as this will affect where you put the ears!

Attach the ears using a small amount of edible glue.

Now pipe the cat’s collar using the pink buttercream, it will take shape very quickly!

The final thing to do is add the face; if your cake is fondant-covered like mine, you can paint this on like so. I used edible gold paint for this one.

If you have a buttercream cake, or a larger cake where you want more prominent features, mould these using fondant paste or fondant, attach to the cake, and paint gold.

Add a fondant initial or collar tag if desired, and some fur between the ears.
