What is Rape

Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or related sexual penetration carried out against a person without that person's consent. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority, or against a person who is incapable of giving valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, has an intellectual disability or is below the legal age of consent.Definition

Various Types of Rape

Rape can be categorized in different ways: for example, by reference to the situation in which it occurs, by the identity or characteristics of the victim, and by the identity or characteristics of the perpetrator. These categories are referred to as types of rape. The types of rape described below are not mutually exclusive: a given rape can fit into multiple categories,

• Date Rape: Is a non-domestic rape committed by someone who knows the victim, and this could also be drug facilitated (DFSA - Drug facilitated Sexual Assault), where the rapist intentionally drugs the victim with a drug so that they are incapacitated

• Gang Rape: Gang rape occurs when a group of people participate in the rape of a single victim. Rape involving at least two or more violators

• Spousal Rape: This is so known as marital rape (either wife rape, husband rape or partner rape), is rape between a married or de facto couple.

Yes, this is possible because Sex under legal terms, require consent.

Research has shown that victims of marital rape suffer longer lasting trauma than victims of stranger rape

• Children Rape: This is rape of a child and uts a form of Child Abuse. When committed by another child (usually older or stronger) or adolescent, it is called Child-on-Child sexual abuse. When committed by a parent or other close relatives such as grandparents, aunts and uncles, it is also incest and can result in serious and long-term psychological trauma.

Other Types of Rape

Payback and corrective rape both have cultural influences and are very unique.
Payback rape is usually done by a gang of men against a female as punishment or to humiliate member's of her family for wrong acts committed [usually the father or brother of the victim] while corrective rape is done against LGBT usually as a hate crime or form of punishment in response to the victim's perceived sexual or gender orientation.

Rape Myths

There are myths about rape and i outlined a few of them.

Someone who's willingly drunk lots of alcohol or taken drugs shouldn't complain if they end up being raped or sexually assaulted

It's only rape if someone is physically forced into sex and has the injuries to show for it.

People who were sexually abused as children are likely to become abusers themselves

Only young, 'attractive' women and girls, who flirt and wear 'revealing' clothes, are raped

Once a man is sexually aroused he cannot help himself; he has to have sex.

Men of certain races and backgrounds are more likely to commit sexual violence

Alcohol, drugs, stress or depression can turn people into rapists

Are these true? All these myths and the truths about them would be discussed extensively at the show here tonight.

There are so many therapeutic methods to treat rape victims, for the sake of this post, i would be mentioning one and that is:

Stress Inoculation Rape therapy

Stress inoculation rape therapy was developed to treat those who suffer elevated fear and anxiety due to the trauma from their rape experience which causes them to exhibit certain avoidance behaviors (such as avoiding walking in the dark).
It includes three phases

• Education – The victim is taught that fear is a normal response to trauma. Also teaches about cues that may trigger fear and anxiety in the victim (such as places, things that remind the victim of the rape).

• Skill building – Victims are taught ways to control their fear reactions physically and psychologically. This skills includes cognitive behavioral techniques like thought stopping, mental rehearsal and guided self-talk.

• Application – victims now use their new skills to engage and respond in fearful situations. They are also taught to avoid self-criticism and manage avoidance behavior as well as have a reward system for themselves as they make progress.

Stress inoculation therapy has been shown to be successful in treating rape victims.

On the show, we would deal with and discuss real-life experiences of people with deep intimacy and humanness thereby exploring the depths of our humanity and relating with the challenges, joys, achievements and sufferings of the people who occupy the earth with us. This is to educate, profer solutions, give comfort to those involved with challenges.
