Why read?

Reading plays a major aspect of our lives. It not only stimulates your mind but also improves your creativity and imagination which is essential to keep our mind active and running. The benefits of keeping habits of reading books is not limited to few lists. Those who read have been known to have more finely-tuned brains than those who prefer more passive activities, so anyone hoping to improve their mind both psychologically and cognitively might want to think about taking up the habit of regular reading.

1. Mental Stimulation

Brain is a complex organ of our body and it requires constant exercise and stimulation or constant effective functioning. Studies have shown that those who have the habit of reading have broaden understanding of the world and how they perceive the world. They are imaginative, creative and have good communication skill.

2. Stress Reduction

No matter how much stress you have at work, in your personal relationships, or countless other issues faced in daily life, it all just slips away when you lose yourself in a great story. A well-written novel can transport you to other realms, while an engaging article will distract you and keep you in the present moment, letting tensions drain away and allowing you to relax.

3. Increased Focus and Concentration

Reading books require great deal of focus and concentration. It requires a person to fully engaged in a book involves closing off the outside world and immersing yourself into the text, which over time will strengthen your attention span.

4. It improves your memory

When you have the habit of reading books than you have good functioning of brain. With greater focus and concentration, you are able to develop better memory power.

5. Good Analytical Skills

Have you ever read an amazing mystery novel, and solved the mystery yourself before finishing the book? If so, you were able to put critical and analytical thinking to work by taking note of all the details provided and sorting them out to determine “whodunnit”.
That same ability to analyze details also comes in handy when it comes to critiquing the plot; determining whether it was a well-written piece, if the characters were properly developed, if the storyline ran smoothly, etc. Should you ever have an opportunity to discuss the book with others, you’ll be able to state your opinions clearly, as you’ve taken the time to really consider all the aspects involved.

6. Getting Inspiration

Good books written by business people and those who have succeed in their respective fields are source of motivation and inspiration. Their story and their journey helps us to learn and get knowledge from their experience. So by reading good books everyday, you are able to accumulate great amount of knowledge.

7. Better Vocabulary

The more you read, the more words you gain exposure to, and they’ll inevitably make their way into your everyday vocabulary. Being articulate and well-spoken is of great help in any profession, and knowing that you can speak to higher-ups with self-confidence can be an enormous boost to your self-esteem. It could even aid in your career, as those who are well-read, well-spoken, and knowledgeable on a variety of topics tend to get promotions more quickly (and more often) than those with smaller vocabularies and lack of awareness of literature, scientific breakthroughs, and global events.

8. Improved Writing Skill

Once you improve your vocabulary you have improved your writing skill naturally. You are effectively able to express your feeling into words. You are able to use your imagination and reflect them into your writing.

9. Better Social Life

Let's face it. We all have faced a situation where we run out of ideas to talk about. If you have the habit of reading than you have endless things to talk about. Science, technology, history, mystery you name it.

10. Entertainment

Reading once a habit is a great source of entertainment. People say that it is better than watching TV. By reading books you can picture the story in your head instead of the TV doing the work for you.

So, as you can see reading is a great habit that one should acquire. Reading 2-3 hours a day should keep your mind healthy and active with better analytical skill.

Here are 5 books that I simply loved. I recommend them to you.

-The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
-The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
-The Lean Startup by Eric Ries

Some great reasons right there!

Mostly I read non-fiction, 'personal development' type books but am looking to branch out. I like writing about those too as I can add my '2 cents' to what as been written as it relates to me and potentially others.

I see you're a Coelho fan! I'm due a read of another of his books. I haven't read Adultery so could start there…

Yes books that are motivational and inspirational to make are life better are worth reading.
Do read Adultery. It's a great book.

Hi @sizandyola. It's great to find at least one person encouraging people to read. I'm new to Steemit and my most recent posts are about how important books are, always have been and always will. I'm doing my head in trying to think of a way to get people to understand this. Please check out my post and let me know what you think.

I'll be sure to do that :)

You have provided a valid list of reasons why people should start reading. I'm an avid reader myself and totally agree with all your reasons to read.

I love mystery stories and am always trying to figure out who have done the dark deed. I even once did a post wondering if too many crime novels can be bad for your health.

Your last reason about reading being entertaining, is the one that actually resonates with me the most. I would rather read a good book instead of watching TV.

I do not really have a list of favourite books but more a list of favourite authors;

  • Kathy Reichs
  • Patricia Cornwall
  • Wilber Smith
  • Sydney Sheldon
  • Nora Roberts

to name a few. Thank you so much for such a great post.

Oh yes. Sydney Sheldon, Charles Dickens. Great writers of their time. Nah, I don't think reading too many crime novels can be bad for you. On contrary it will definitely makes you think everything analytically. Unless it gets you do commit crimes too, lol.

Ah yes, that is a possibility but definitely not my style. Let's leave it for the criminal minded people who really miss out a lot when they could have read a good book instead.
