Raspberry Pi is a typical microcontroller for Prusa 3d printers.

For robotics I recommend getting involved in local clubs. I live in a small town in USA, and we have several robotics clubs. These clubs are usually run by engineers and university professors. Magazines are great, but nothing can beat a regular face-to-face with experienced pros.

Plus, engineers have experience that will go beyond robotics into advanced topics that you wouldn't know exist if you didn't talk to an engineer like custom PCB printing and custom ROM programming.
