Raspberry Pi first steps

in #raspberry7 years ago

I just received my very first Raspberry: a Raspberry Pi Zero W. Cost only 10 bucks (plus 9 shipping, armed robbery in comparison). I've ordered the housing and power supplies and cables separately off aliexpress (www.aliexpress.com) because they're cheaper than ordering local. Only the board itself was cheaper here. Anyway, see picture to see how cool this is, much smaller than a credit card! Awesome!

As I mentioned before, the plan is to play around with the IOTA ecosystem. I ordered a Pi 3 B and the Zero. The idea would be that the Zero would be some sort of sensor (camera? weather station?) and the Pi 3B runs either a full node and/or queries the Zero and "pays" for sensor data.

Anyway, so far nothing interesting is actually happening since I only just got the Zero this morning, but just for my future reference, here are the important Zero specs:

  • Dimensions: 65mm × 30mm × 5mm
  • SoC: Broadcom BCM2835
  • CPU: ARM11 running at 1GHz
  • RAM: 512MB
  • Wireless: 2.4GHz 802.11n wireless LAN
  • Bluetooth: Bluetooth Classic 4.1 and Bluetooth LE
  • Power: 5V, supplied via micro USB connector
  • Video & Audio: 1080P HD video & stereo audio via mini-HDMI connector
  • Storage: MicroSD card
  • Output: Micro USB
  • GPIO: 40-pin GPIO, unpopulated
  • Pins: Run mode, unpopulated; RCA composite, unpopulated
  • Camera Serial Interface (CSI)

More info here.

The features that I find most interesting in the Zero W (other than the size) is the built in WiFi and Bluetooth. Oodles of cool things you can do with those! And automatic network connectivity built in. Cool!

To do in the future: Figure out how to interface this to batteries (to make it truly portable / autonomous). To be continued...!

Hi and nice to see you buy your first board, when you have one .... you probably will buy one more soon :)

You should be able to power it with most powerbanks without any modification.

Cool, thanks for the tip. I was thinking indeed of using a power bank as a kind of UPS. Still researching but that's the plan. :)
