Lake

Rara Lake is the largest lake in Nepal, situated in the remote and serene region of Mugu District in the far northwestern part of the country. Nestled at an elevation of about 2,990 meters (9,810 feet) above sea level, the lake covers an area of approximately 10.8 square kilometers (4.2 square miles) and reaches a maximum depth of 167 meters (548 feet). The lake lies within Rara National Park, which spans 106 square kilometers and is rich in biodiversity.

Rara Lake is often described as a "blue gem" because of its clear, tranquil waters, surrounded by dense pine, spruce, and juniper forests. The picturesque landscape is complemented by snow-capped Himalayan peaks in the distance. The lake itself is fed by multiple small streams, and the Mugu Karnali River serves as its main outlet.

The surrounding Rara National Park is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Visitors might spot Himalayan black bears, red pandas, and musk deer in the forests, while the lake is a habitat for various fish species, including the rare snow trout. Numerous bird species, both migratory and native, also thrive in the area, making it a haven for birdwatchers.

Due to its remote location, Rara Lake remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, offering a peaceful retreat for adventurers and nature lovers. The trek to the lake is considered moderately challenging, with routes passing through traditional villages, forests, and mountainous terrain. The best time to visit Rara Lake is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is clear, and the scenery is at its most breathtaking.
