Random Challenge #51 - Classics Book's Roulette

in #randomcotd7 years ago

Hi Steemians! Here I am again with the Random Challenge N° 51 from @khackett and I have to say, this one has been my favorite til now by far, this time we have to Invent a fictional sport or game. In first place I'm gonna tell you how I came up with this idea and why I decided to do it like this.

I love Trivia's games a lot, and thinking about a topic I could choose for the questions I thought of making the trivia about books, but there are so much genres and subgenres and is so extended to use it that could make the game too much. But well, I am the one making the game so got the idea of working just with the greatest classics that everyone must know, even if you haven't read them I'm really sure that you have watched the movie, heard someone talking or explaining the history, at least a reference about any of the following books you have read or something. Of course there are as well hundreds of books that are considered classics so I made a research, looking for several lists and selecting the books that appeared in almost all of them, that was my standard, then with my own list with 16 classics I divided them in four genres:

Novel:

  • One hundred years of solitude - Gabriel García Márquez.
  • The great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald.
  • Crime and punishment - Fiodor Dostoievski.
  • Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert.

Romantic:

  • Pride and prejudice - Jane Austen.
  • Wuthering heights - Emily Brontë.
  • Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy.
  • A tale of two cities - Charles Dickens.

Fantasy and Science Fiction:

  • Gulliver's travels - Jonathan Swift.
  • The war of the worlds - H.G. Wells.
  • Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll.
  • Journey to the center of the Earth - Jules Verne.

Horror and Gothic Narrative:

  • The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - Robert Louis Stevenson.
  • The picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde.
  • Dracula - Bram Stoker.
  • Frankenstein - Mary Shelley.

The Game

The game comes with an 8 sided dice, the board that has the start square and the final square and of course all the path for the pieces, a mini roulette with the genres of the books divided by colors (green for novel, purple for romantic, blue for fantasy and science fiction and red for horror and gothic narrative) , 6 pieces for 6 players that are alusive to the books (a cat for AIW, a car for TGG, a space ship for TWOTW, a boat for GT, an Erlenmeyer flask for TSCODJ&MH, and a guillotine for ATOTC) and the cards with the questions and answers of 4 categories: Quotes, characters, plot, location. The questions could be something like:

  • Quotes: Guessing which character said xxxx quote or saying the phrase of an specific situation.

Example: Who said "I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul" and from which book is it?

  • Characters: Naming an especific character (or more) or according to the situation that could say the card, name the character.

Example: Who gives the Darcy's letter to Elizabeth?

  • Plot: Explaining an important part of the book or saying what's it about.

Example: What's the principal theme of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?

  • Location: According to the character or the situation saying where does it happens.

Example: Where does Nick meet Gatsby?

How to play?

The players throw the dice and the one that has the highest number starts moving his piece to the first right square, depending on the square his pieces lands he will spin the roulette to know from which genre his going to be asked and another player will read him the corresponding question, if the answer's correct the player will keep moving until he has 3 correct answers (for letting chances to other players) or mistakes the answer. The path to follow is all the outside of the board; the players have to win 3 points for each book genre (that means 3 correct answers per genre), once the player wins all the 12 points he'll has the possibility to go to the center and final square and answer a final question to win.

Rules

The rules are pretty simple, mostly explained on the way of playing, but to be clear:

  • The answer's considered correct if it's exact or really close to the card answer.
  • The player will lose his turn if his answer is wrong.
  • If the player hasn't mistake it, he will play until the third correct answer for letting the others to play.
  • The answer must be from the player knowledge, researching or asking someone else is cheating.

Roulette versions

It has another two versions! As this one is about classics the other, which plays exactly like the classic one, has modern literature like The perks of being a wallflower - Stephen Chbosky, November 9 - Colleen Hoover, Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin and Sleeping Beauties - Stephen King and a total children version, which of course is way more simple, just about to win 5 points and there's not a genre division, and has books like The little prince - Antoine De Saint-Exupéry, Peter Pan - James Barrie, Little red riding hood - Charles Perrault and Pinocho - Carlo Collodi. (just four for the examples!).

That's all for my idea :) and I really hope you like it because I spent almost a week thinking and preparing everything hahaha. All despite my classes, this week have been tough x.x See you on my next post!
