Earthsearch/Maata etsimässä/Operasjon Jordsøk

in #radio6 years ago (edited)

When I was nine years old I was first introduced to the British science fiction radio drama Earthsearch written by James Follet and released for the first time on BBC on the 6th of January 1981. I listed to the Finnish language version created by Radio Theater of the Finnish Broadcasting Company, released somewhat later than the original British version. It tells the story of Challenger a ship designed to explore the universe and capable of near light speed travel. Its model of physics and astronomy is largely accurate. Time dilation is a major plot element. The first season contains 8-9 episodes depending on the version and the second season contains 10 episodes.

In addition to the BBC version, two foreign language versions were made: Finnish (like I mentioned above) and Norwegian. Out of curiosity, when I'd hear rumors that a Norwegian language version existed about ten years ago, I sent email to NRK (the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) to ask if it existed. The answer was negative. But later, I discovered the Norwegian version on YouTube. Government employees ... LOL

Are any of my followers (British, Finnish, Norwegian) old enough to have listened to this as kids? Do you have favourite shows you enjoyed in your childhoold you'd like to share with us?

Here are all the versions:

Hi markku. I have never seen this show. When I was young there was a BBC programme called Blue Peter.

Ah, Earthsearch! Never thought I'd see that name here of all places. Around what I think is half a decade ago I caught a number of episodes of the show on BBC Radio 7 (or was it 4 Extra? could have been either), but I've never tracked down the whole series.
Now I don't have any excuse no to catch up, thank you Markku! 🤓

I think you can find all of the episodes on YouTube. There are, I think, one or even two spin-off series set in the same universe.

Luckily Wikipedia has a reference to at least one of 'em Earthsearch Mindwarp.

Ah I pine for the good old days of raioarchive.cc
While legally grey (it only allowed personal recordings off-radio -- no store-bought audio), this massive archive of old programs, finely categorized, with descriptions and comments was a radio-lovers godsend. Wasn't even "taken down" or anything, the hosting costs just became too much for the owner.

in 1982 Lmao i wasnt even in the liquid form at that time hahah but glad to know about it earth search would be too much informative at that time wasnt it ?

My friends and I who were big fans had no trouble understanding it. The show is quite well known among guys about my age who are into sci-fi.
