The music for the national anthem was stolen, Key simply added the words of his poem "The Defence of Fort McHenry", to the popular drinking song "The Anacreontic Song" plagiarized from Britain's Anacreontic Society.

British musician John Stafford Smith (1750-1836) originally composed the music for the Anacreontic Society during the late 1700's in London, England, NOT Francis Scott Key.

Good post about the music but the words from Key's poem "The Defence of Fort McHenry" are still racist talking about killing black slaves who tried to escape slavery.
