I don't recall any announcement. I think @daveks just stopped posting a theme. I imagine it's a lot of work and expense. I'm happy that @brumest still keeps #monomad running though.
Yup, I bet it's not easy to run a long-term contest. I used to host a few short-term ones which required lots of time and expense already. Kudos to these hosts!
