The most amazing thing of all is that allowing players from all races would have set the Phillies up to be a powerhouse, perhaps up to this day. The Dodgers became the front runners of exploring the world for the best talent available and built a dynasty from the 1950's through 1970's upon that. Can you imagine if the Phillies could've replaced Josh Gibson with Roy Campanella in the mid-late forties? Replace Buck O'Neill with Elston Howard? Bring in Don Newcombe, players like Roberto Clemente (originally signed by the Dodgers but selected by the Pirates in the most famous ever Rule 5 Draft pick ever, of course) and countless other players in the pre draft era that signed with the clubs as free agents. It boggles my mind, and actually I think could've hurt integration because that team would've been so dominant, turning them into even more a lightning rod for anti tolerant excuse making. But then again the Dodgers started winning championships when they started signing players who happened to be black (1955 first ever championship in franchise history with Newcombe, Campanella, Robinson)
We would have been a totally different Country if racism had not been part of the picture. It would also have been totally different if there had never been any black people brought to this Country or allowed to immigrate here because of racism. No matter how you look at it, the fact remains that we are still paying for the past sins of this Country and the injustices that were done by our Government on its citizens and by the citizens to each other. I wonder what the price will be for our current sins and injustices? 😦
