Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (13 August 1926 – 25 November 2016) was a Cuban communist revolutionary and the leader of Cuba from 1959 (when, leading the 26th of July Movement, he overthrow the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista turning Cuba into the first Communist nation in the Western Hemisphere) until handing off power to his younger brother Raúl in February 2008.
Politically a Marxist–Leninist and Cuban nationalist, under his administration, improvements were made to health care and education, while industry and business were nationalized.
