Wanting to become a "writer" is your first mistake.
The problem here is the label "writer". Although word arrangement is an independent creative activity, but in fact it is not. Words are a means for us to get to destination. The destination shows something, speaks some truth or approaches someone.
Good writing technique doesn't mean much. On the other hand, a deep, compelling and impressive message can pave the way for a struggling writer to write a whole sentence.
So, I think that if you want to become an author, let the technique rewrite behind. When you find something new and different and you feel that you cann't but share it with the whole world right away, you'll end up typing until you interpret it in one form or another.
As always, contemplate the quotations on this subject, they are right below:
Authors like cats because they are such quiet, lovable, wise creatures, and cats like authors for the same reasons.
Author: Robertson Davies
Nothing goes by luck in composition. It allows of no tricks. The best you can write will be the best you are.
Author: Henry David Thoreau
May I make a suggestion, hoping it is not an impertinence? Write it down: write down what you feel. It is sometimes a wonderful help in misery.
Author: Robertson Davies
Writing is a dreadful labor, yet not so dreadful as Idleness.
Author: Thomas Carlyle
