Quote of the Day/ Zitat des Tages #144 ENG/DEU
With the wings of time, sadness flies away.
Jean de La Fontaine
Jean de La Fontaine was a French writer. His fables are still very popular in France today.
He began studying theology, but broke it off two years later. He spent two more years at home, where he spent most of his time reading. Finally he moved to Paris where he studied law from 1645 to 1647. This time he was admitted as a lawyer in the Supreme Court.
In 1658 he published his first work, the "little epic Adonis". He dedicated it to the Minister of Finance, Nicolas Fouquet, to whom he was a regular guest. On his behalf he wrote poems again and again in the future. However, when Fouquet fell out of favour with Louis XIV and was even arrested, he withdrew to Limoges for a few months as a precaution. Here he devoted himself to writing erotic novels, which, however, did not earn him as much fame as his later fables.
