What is karma good or bad?

in #question6 years ago

The doctrine of 'Karma' was propounded in the ancient Hindu sculptures. According to this doctrine everything that happens with us, everything what we receive and everything that makes us happy or sad results from our deeds. If you harm someone, you will also be harmed by someone else. If you help someone, somebody else will also help you in a similar situation. A thief has to stay in jail for his bad acts and equally a good person is rewarded in the end for his generous actions.

According to this doctrine our 'karma' i.e. deeds are like boomerangs which bounce back towards us. What we sow, so shall we reap. What goes around, comes around. We cannot be free from karma untill we attain the state of 'nirvana' or 'moksha'- the eternal peace. This doctrine also refers to the spiritual principle of cause and effect. In other words, the intent and actions of an individual influence the future of that individual even after his reincarnation. Karma cannot be erased. They make an indelible impression on the future of the individuals. They follow his birth after birth. The doctrine of karma has been an integral part of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism and some other Asian religions including Taoism.

This doctrine propounds that whatever pain one sustains, results from the past life’s deeds. If someone is born with deficiencies, it may be the result of his/her past life’s sins. If someone is born in a socially low status family, it may be due to his bad deeds in his past life. Hence, its theory suggests that every action has reaction, but the reaction takes time and the quantum of the reaction is always greater than the action.

However, there are many meanings of this word and also the meaning varies with the religions. For some people it is a metaphor while for some it may be a model or a paradigm. It also refers to the moral and ethical duties.

The principal reason of the inception of this theory was to constitute a society in which every individual was supposed to perform his moral duties with no hesitation. Formation of an ideal society was the main goal in the minds of the pioneers of this theory. They wanted to base the society according to the values. People who believe in the doctrine of 'karma', don't do anything which may make their 'karma' bad.

But, this theory has many flaws. It made people lazy, incompetent, fatalists and superstitious. People doubted their every action and attributed everything bad as their past life's sins. Even it made them apathetic to the condition of the downtrodden and unfortunate persons because they were certain that the cause of their suffering was the result of their past sins. It divided the society and maintained the status quo. Poor and downtrodden were not ready to change their bad conditions because they were made to realize that their past 'karma' were responsible for their present condition. Theories were also devised that the suffering decreases the past sins.

Hence, the doctrine of Karma was a nice theory but it could not stop the moral turpitude of the society. In fact, it exacerbated the situation and made people fatalists and apathetic to the conditions of the downtrodden and ill-fated persons.

Well I think whatever happens it only happens because of karma..

I think the term 'Karma' can be misleading. We can see karma as the result of the past deeds and it may be taken as destiny. If everything is written well in advance, then we are not responsible for our deeds because our program made us to do what we did. And if we get bad treatment in life because of our past lives, then this punishment becomes irrelevant because there is no use of punishing someone when he has no idea of his mistake.

Suppose a kid stole his classmate's pencil. Teacher knows it but don't say anything about it at that time. However, after a year he suddenly slaps that kid but don't tell him the reason. Will this action do any good of that kid? Will it not mislead him further? What is the use of this kind of punishment? Certainly, it is not in the favor of the kid or anybody else. So, is the doctrine of karma. It doesn't punish or warn us in the right time but it punishes us when we are totally unaware of our sins and mistakes. So, I think it is not a good system at all. If God has created it, then I would say God has not done a right thing.

This is an interesting question. Your answer is quite good. But it is a vast topic and is something that can be easily misinterpreted. The interesting fact is that, many religion belives Karma.

Yes, every religion believes in Karma, otherwise the there would be no concept of heaven and hell.

I think the term 'Karma' can be misleading. It can be misinterpreted because of its inherent shortcomings.

Question was not mine. I answered it only.
