Putin's new weapon systems - the message behind
The Annual address to the Federal Assembly was mostly targeting the domestic audience, carefully tailored to revamp the humiliation suffered following the loss of hundreds of private Russian soldiers in Syria and on a broader plane to refill the national pride reservoir, depleted in a sequence of reputation damaging event - sanctions, oil and gas price drops, leading to budget cuts, not only in the social sphere but also in the security and defense sectors.
The array of weapon systems at display at the Moscow Manege, most below the threshold of material evidence, are a classic example of brinkmanship policy, blending real, but still in different stage of testing regimes, with conceptual designs that are still a far cry from regular use in the Russian army.
Putin's bluffs have so far been largely ignored and his policies of sabre-rattling have left few in the West impressed. He is borrowing respect and policy dividends from future virtual reality.
Once again Russia is desperately trying to impress in the military field to cover for Putin's total failures in delivering welfare and security to the Russian people.
