Punisher Rodrigo Duterte, president Rodrigo Duterte was on the cover of the Time Magazine on 23 of May.

“If you are doing an illegal activity in my city, if you are a criminal or part of a syndicate that preys on the innocent people of the city, for as long as I am the mayor, you are a legitimate target of assassination,” Mr Duterte said in 2009.

Three years later, on a press conference, he offered $120,000 reword for every gang leader . $24,000 bonus if the the head of the gang leader was brought in a bag of ice , “so it won’t smell so bad”.

On May 9, 2016, Duterte won the Philippine presidential election with 39.01% of the votes. He defeated four other candidates, namely Mar Roxas of the Liberal Party (23.4%), Sen. Grace Poe of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (21.6%), former vice president Jejomar Binay of the United Nationalist Alliance (12.9%), and the late Sen. Miriam Defensor – Santiago of the People’s Reform Party (3%).

Duterte’s political success has been aided by his vocal support for the extrajudicial killing of drug users and other criminals.Human rights groups have documented over 1,400 killings allegedly by death squads operating in Davao between 1998 and May 2016. The victims were mainly drug users, petty criminals and street children.
Afterwards, Duterte ordered the Philippine National Police to kill his children if they’re caught being involved in drugs.

Various international publications and media companies had claimed that Duterte’s “War on Drugs” was a war against the poor due to the abject poverty of those arrested or killed.

In August 18, 2017, Duterte admitted his mistake in trying to end drugs in 6 months, and it would take him his entire term to end it.

The Philippine leader has become notorious for his controversial statements about world leaders and the church, among others.
