Breaking Free From Depression Pt.1

in #psychology7 years ago

I see depression as a pit
A deep pit that people can't see the way out
They lose hope
The pit is very narrow and they can't move around. They feel powerless.
The pit is dark and confusing. They don't know where to turn.
The pit is lonely. People feel like nobody cares about them or what they are going through. They feel nobody cares about where they have gone and begin to feel worthless. They begin to think of taking their own lives.

William Styron, Pulitzer Prize winning author explained his experience this way :

"For those who have dwelt in depression's dark wood, and known its inexplicable agony, their return from abyss is not unlike the ascent of the poet, trudging upward and upward out of hell's black depth and at last emerging into what he saw as the shining world"

This he said in his book Darkness Visible : A Memoir of madness after climbing out of the pit.

Symptoms of depression are deeply personal and sometimes embarrassing.

Some people cry so much, others pull away from friends and family - they just want to stay alone in their rooms.
Some stay off food, sex and hobbies as they lose their appeal. What was once fun isn't anymore.
Martin Luther and Abraham Lincoln had their episodes.

Luther had uncontrollable crying moments that Charles Spurgeon wrote :

"His great spirit was often in the seventh heaven of exultation and as frequently on the borders of despair. His very death bed was not free of tempests, and he sobbed himself into his last sleep like a great wearied child"

For Lincoln, it was fatigue and thoughts of suicide. He described his depressive moments as "debilitating episodes of hypos". In order to protect him, a friend had to to take away all knives and dangerous things.
A cleric in his episodes appeared in agitated moods. He becomes pessimistic, angry and his short temper was becoming a nuisance to his family.

Looking back at depression, such a period of time can seem like madness. It's tough to conceive.
How do well adjusted people begin to think and feel in ways that don't make sense?

Do you experience any of the above? Don't give in yet. Hang on

To be continued.
