Clothes can definitely alter people's perception of you and your own feelings. I find the comfy clothes I wear everyday makes me feel a lot better than jeans or a suit, but it is always needed for job interviews and such or they don't see you as being professional.
As long as the clothes you wear make you happy and confident about your abilities and behavior, you have picked the right ones ;)
