ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY: PHOBIAS AND IMPLICATIONS OF PHOBIA. PART 1

in #psychology6 years ago

The word Phobia was derived from the Greek word 'Phobos' which means 'Fear'
Phobia means the specific fear of a certain object, situation or activity. The fear experience can range from a sense of unease to a full blown panic attack. Most people learn to live with their fear; their phobias but for others, the fear can be so debilitating that they go to extremes to avoid those fearful situations. Phobias are characterized by their specificity and irrationality.

People fear almost everything therefore we have so many types of phobia but I am going to move from the common to uncommon ones. Some phobias are even so weird and quite unusual.
Acrophobia – Fear of Heights.
Arachnophobia – Fear of Spiders.
Ophidiophobia – Fear of Snakes.
Agoraphobia – Fear of Having a Panic Attack in Public.
Mysophobia – Fear of Germs.
Cynophobia – Fear of Dogs

ACROPHOBIA - Fear of height.
image
This is an extreme or irrational fear or phobia of heights , especially when one is not particularly high up.
People with this phobia can sail around the world on a boat fearlessly on a sailboat but refuse to go the balcony of the fifth floor of a building.

ARACHNOPHOBIA – Fear of Spiders.
image
People with arachnophobia tend to feel uneasy in any area they believe could harbor spiders or that has visible signs of their presence, such as webs . As harmless as some spiders are, if arachnophobics see a spider, they may not enter the general vicinity until they have overcome the panic attack that is often associated with their phobia. Some people scream , cry, have emotional outbursts, develop goose bumps, experience trouble breathing, sweat , have heart palpitations, or even faint when they come in contact with an area near spiders or their webs. In some extreme cases, even a picture or a realistic drawing of a spider can trigger intense fear. It is common in predominantly European societies

OPHIDIOPHOBIA - Fear of snakes.
image
Ophidiophobia or ophiophobia is a particular type of specific phobia , the abnormal fear of snakes . It is sometimes called by a more general term, herpetophobia, fear of reptiles or amphibians. Even though snakes can be dangerous and quite scary, people with phobia for it,overrate the fear of it.

AGORAPHOBIA – Fear of Having a Panic Attack in Public.
image
Panic disorder is currently diagnosed as occurring with or without agoraphobia , a separate condition that is characterized by extreme fear. A person with agoraphobia is
afraid of having a panic attack in public places or situations in which it would be difficult and/or embarrassing to flee.

MYSOPHOBIA - Fear of germs.
image
The person having mysophobia is excessively concerned about being infected with germs and harmful substances. On the contrary, the situation possesses no risk at all as the person actually thinks it is. This kind of irrational and unreasonable fear and anxiety associated with such contamination is known as mysophobia.

CYNOPHOBIA - the fear of dogs.
image
Cynophobia is classified as a specific phobia , under the subtype "animal phobias". Dogs are lovely animals that could be kept as pets and it is rather funny that some people have extreme fear for it.

SOME OTHER TYPES OF PHOBIAS ARE:

Xanthophobia – fear of the colour yellow.
image
Sufferers of xanthophobia may fear anything yellow, including the sun, and funny enough even the phrase yellow.

Turophobia- fear of cheese.
image
Some may fear one type of cheese while others may fear cheese altogether.

Somniphobia- fear of falling asleep.
image
This often because the sufferers may fear dying from sleep, loosing time(especially those with demanding works). I find this phobia really funny.

Coulrophobia – fear of clowns.
image
Sufferers often develop this phobia during childhood probably due to movies they saw. They then form the habit of being scared of clowns.

Hylophobia- fear of trees.
image
Hylophobia involves an irrational fear of wood, forest, or trees. It is often caused by exposure to films and fairy tales which involve scary woods. People with this phobia suffer extreme anxiety when they simply think about a wood.

Omphalophobia- fear of the navel.
image
Omphalophobia is the fear of bullybuttons. Sufferers are afraid to have their bellybuttons touched, or to touch another person's belly button. Omphalophobes can be repulsed just by seeing or thinking about a belly button

Nomophobia- fear of being without mobile phone coverage.
image
Half of people in the UK suffer this. The phobia is brought on by the fear of losing signal, running out of battery or even losing sight of a mobile phone.

Ombrophobia- fear of rain.
image
Ombrophobes have an abnormal fear of rain which can cause severe anxiety attacks. They often associate rain with depression.

Papaphobia- fear of the pope.
image
The fear of the pope or the papacy is uncommon. It is closely related to Hierophobia (the fear of holy individuals or sacred things). It is also related to hagiophobia which is an exaggerated or irrational fear or dislike of saints and holy things. The fear is often triggered by a trauma associated with the pope. Sufferers could be good people contrary to general opinion.

Uranophobia- fear of heaven.
image
Sufferers of uranophobia fear the sky and the afterlife. It can be triggered in religious believers who fear the idea that they will be judged after life.

Pogonophobia- fear of beards.
image
The term pogonophobia has been used since the 1850s to describe a strong fear of beards. Sufferers could loose girlfriends who actually love the beard gang.

Trypophobia- fear of holes.
image
Sufferers of trypophobia fear objects with small holes. It is not yet considered an official phobia, although thousands of people are reported to suffer from it. According to new research trypophobics associate holes with danger. Examples of feared objects include sponge.

Triskaidekaphobia- fear of the number 13.
image
Many people are superstitious about the number 13 but few have a fully fledged phobia. Sufferers take great care to avoid using, or doing anything related to the number.
