The paradox of the second place.
We all think about the alternative scenario of many events in our lives. Silver prizewinner realizes that he was the closest man to the gold, and winner of the bronze happy that he stands on the pedestal and didn't showed the fourth result.
About 100 years ago American psychologist William James has told about the paradox of human, who died of shame, because he became the second boxer in the world. He can win of every man on the earth, except one. This means that he hasn't reached a full success, hasn't done the last step.
Since 1992 psychologists have conducted a number of researches on this topic among the Olympians. after the Olympic games the researchers made analysis of athletes photos on the podium and their interviews, this studies revealed that the athletes in third place were more happy than silver prizewinners . Psychologists suggest that silver medalists compare their results with the gold winners. And bronze winners think about the athletes, who don't receive a medal at all.
Analysis of the interviews of silver and bronze winners after the awards ceremony also showed that the second place winners often said that they didn't do all what they could for win. Participants who took the third place, on the contrary, glowed from pleasure and told to reporters that today is the best day of their life, and this is only the beginning for future victories.
For many decades psychologists have note an irony in the competition of elite athletes. If you do not take into account gold medals, and only look at the second and third steps of the pedestal, men and women with the bronze medals invariably look happier than the silver medalists.
In 2016, another team of researchers used a video of the British Olympic and Paralympic teams from the ceremonies of awarding medals at the 2012 Olympics in London. For the analysis was chosen one team to exclude the difference in vital signs, level of income and education, because they affect what a person is able to feel in a certain situation.
Researchers removed the medals from videos (to avoid their influence on the observer opinion) and provided brief information about the athletes. This action maximally focused the attention of observers on the face of the athletes. The video contains the first five seconds after the entry of athletes on a pedestal. Observers on the basis of the watched videos, answered on the next question:
How do you assess the emotions on the athlete's face (use scale from 0 to 10, where 0 is the agony and 10 is ecstasy)?
The athletes mood was also depended on their results. Gold winner with results, which were as close as possible to the second place, was less happy than winner by a huge margin. And vice versa: silver medalists were more happy, because they hadn't became the third (by showing a close result to this place), and was upset if he was on the verge of full victory.
The results of these research can be use not only in the field of sports. Try to remember your life situation, each of us have cases when we were the seconds among many. What did you feel? Didn't made all that you could? Or you are just not lucky and you are happy no matter what?
This is a translation from Russian, plagiarism.
Here is a source of the article: https://geektimes.ru/post/279664/
@steemcleaners
Wow, while i was making a new post i haven't saw all this flags for this article. It's unexpected, but maybe fair in some point. But let me say some words: I don't claim on the full original content here, and don’t deny that I saw this article but on another resource: http://www.pvsm.ru/sport/177060 . and before it i've read original research http://cep.lse.ac.uk/pubs/download/dp1436.pdf (what russian author used too), that research was published more that 1 month ago, and Russian article 1 week ago.
it's hurt to hear about simple plagiarism through translation. I spent about 4 hours on writing this post. Looking for other researches on this theme, and found it only in Russian variant, because it was not easy for me to formulate clear ask in English on google.
I'm certainly grateful to the author (who you pointed out) for the collected material and original text, but anyway i've tried to create post with my own design and more meaning, and with my own minds, and wanted to share by interesting material with steemit community, first of all. Yes I use translator because have not enough knowledge in language, not for stupid convertation. Maybe you are right that it's plagiarism use work of another author like a fundament (like many of us). Maybe I can’t understand difference between my article and others, where users use quotes and fragments from journal articles for example (size 2-3 pages) and add 1 small paragraph of their opinion, and don’t gets any flags. I’ve made an insights from your down-vote. On steemit i can use only experiment and researches of professional scientists like a base for article, and add links on it to avoid negative and accusation. Because it’s enough the one scream about plagiarism in replies to kill my reputation. Thank you.
I don't think that i made something wrong. There is no rule on STEEMIT that content must be full original, there is rule that content must be a usefull and interesting for users (if this article gort so many votes that't mean it was interesting)
But i understantd feelings of other users and I apologize to the readers, who rely on completely original content. I apologize to the authors, who create something really unique, and don't get anything, and every time, when they see article like mine, they are thinking about unfair.
Good for you to own up to this.
Indeed there isn't much by way of rules and best practices, but the will of the users are the final arbiter of what is acceptable or not. Plagiarism is bad policy in general and just because it might be ok for a lot of people and other websites, that doesn't mean the users here have to tolerate it.
I hope that eventually eventually a best practices for content will be discussed and published for all users and especially new users to get an idea of how they should make things.
The last thing I want to see here is people copying others content to profit from it without giving credit to the original source. This isn't kat.cr or piratebay. We can do a good thing here and make it an awesome community or we can be jerks that take others work like selfish children.
It's our choice to make, so where do all of you stand?
Why not just credit source etc - i'd bet this would end up in nearly same vote heights .. !
EXACLTY!
@ doctorstrange and @cass, I agree with it. It was my mistake to perceive STEEMIT like another platform. And don't think about creators and users with enough respect. Because of it my actions looks like insult. I've wrote before why i'm here https://steemit.com/life/@seva/don-t-give-up-if-you-don-t-earn-money-on-steemit>post
And i will be here anyway, because i want to become part of STEEMIT. All down votes that i've got -fair enough i think, and it's not disappoints me. I've disappointed that now i'm looks like the scammer
Humankind, always frustrated...
I'm happy if I don't come in last.
it's like a feeling from 3d place ;)
All I know is second is a lot better than 4th, feel so bad for the fourth place person.
Yes, but when you are on the second place, you are thinking only about first:)
Interesting human nature!
