We need to talk about suicide

A large percentage of the population thought at some point in taking his own life. Every year are recorded about a million worldwide. Because of these alarming figures suicide has become an epidemic. However, it is a silent epidemic because there is a very big taboo of society to talk about it, discuss possibilities of avoidance and even assuming that a loved one has finished with his life.

Breaking taboos

In most cases the one that warns suicide somehow, more than once, before committing the act. But there is a disbelief of the people nearby. Generally believe that the person is just trying to get attention, or that "those who want to kill the truth does not prompt, just kills." Completely wrong thoughts!

The idea of ending one's life is not trivial and can not be considered to be a natural at some point in life. So when someone comes to verbalize the desire to kill, it is important that family members and close people stay tuned instead of disdaining and let the matter drop. In addition to the disbelief and prejudice on the subject, there is also a real unpreparedness of society with the problem.

What to do?

What to do when a loved one is considering the idea of ending his life? Seek professional help and never doubt! Professionals trained to deal with this situation are the psychologist and psychiatrist. Along with this professional network is essential to have a family support that supports this moment of anguish so strong.

Psychological aspects
The vast majority of those who have thought ever to take his own life has some kind of mental illness that led him to believe that this is the best solution to end the generated suffering and all stigma it carries. The most common mental illnesses are depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

There are also other circumstances of life in which the possibility of suicidal ideation is higher, as mourners (mostly elderly), alcohol and drug abuse, people who have suffered abuse or sexual abuse in childhood and helplessness. These are situations in which the anguish and despair are so intense that the person supports not feel.

Generally the process of grief and despair is growing gradually. The person begins to isolate, to avoid situations that were once pleasurable and may even begin to have difficulties in performing everyday tasks like going to work, for example. In this movement, you can not rationally understand the despair size of reason, because "I have everything that anyone would like to have" and, therefore, shame and guilt to be feeling bad though "to be all right before the eyes of others "causes it to close and further isolate. One feels too embarrassed to talk and to ask for help, thus, the symptoms tend to worsen.

To live

Yes there are other outputs! The support and affection of those close, are crucial. Psychotherapy becomes a critical space in which that person can work their ghosts and deepest fears and realize that there are other ways of living despite what happened to him. The medication prescribed by a psychiatrist, also becomes an indispensable ally to allow the anguish and anxiety decrease slightly and, in the case of mental illness, either to the proper treatment.

Life is complex and full of ups and downs. But, it needs to be lived as light as possible. Even when we do not believe or something seems to be greater than our forces are capable of withstanding, there is always a way out! Believe me and not be ashamed! Ask for help to be able to transform difficulties into something less painful and more smooth.
