All About The Brain

in #psychology8 years ago
Your brain controls all your body functions. The brain is the center of your whole body. If your brain is healthy, it will promote the health of the body and support your mental health. Conversely, if your brain is disturbed, then your body and mental health can come disturbed. If your heart or lungs stop working for a few minutes, you can still survive. But if your brain stops working for a second, then your body dies. That's why the brain is called the most important organ. In addition to the most important, the brain is also the most complex organ. Discussing about anatomy and brain function in detail can take days. Therefore here we will discuss the anatomy and function of the brain in outline just to make you understand the parts and functions of your own brain.

As shown in the picture above, the brain is divided into four parts, namely :

1.Cerebrum (Big Brain)
2.Cerebellum (Small Brain)
3.Brainstem
4.Limbic System (Limbic System)

1. Cerebrum (Big Brain)

The cerebrum is the largest part of the human brain, also called Cerebral Cortex, Forebrain or the Brain Home. The cerebrum is a part of the brain that differentiates humans from animals. Cerebrum makes people have the ability to think, analyze, logic, language, awareness, planning, memory and visual ability. Your intellectual or IQ intelligence is also determined by the quality of this section.
The cerebrum is divided into 4 (four) parts called the Lobus. The prominent part of the lobes is called the gyrus and the curved-like curve of a trench is called a sulcus. The four Lobuses are respectively: Frontal Lobe, Parietal Lobe, Occipital Lobe and Temporal Lobes.

  • The Frontal Lobe is part of the existing lobe dipped in front of the Big Brain. This lobe deals with the ability to make excuses, motion abilities, cognition, planning, problem solving, judgment, creativity, feeling control, sexual behavior control and language skills in general.
  • The Parietal lobe is in the middle, associated with the sensory sensor processes such as pressure, touch and pain.
  • The Temporal Lobes are at the bottom dealing with the hearing ability, meaning of information and language in the form of sound.
  • The Occipital lobes are at the very back, associated with visual stimuli that allow humans to be able to interpret the objects captured by the retina of the eye.
  • When described in more detail, each lobe can still be divided into several areas that have their respective functions, as shown in the picture below.

In addition divided into 4 lobes, cerebrum (big brain) can also be divided into two hemispheres, namely the right hemisphere and left cerebral hemisphere. Both hemispheres are connected by the neural wires at the bottom. In general, the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body, and the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body. The right brain engages in creativity and artistic ability. While the left brain for logic and rational thinking.

    2. Cerebellum (Small Brain)

Small Brain or Cerebellum is located at the back of the head, close to the top of the neck. Cerebellum controls many automatic functions of the brain, including: regulating posture or position, controlling balance, muscle coordination and body movement. The Small Brain also stores and carries out a series of automatic movements that are studied such as motion driving, hand movements while writing, door locking and so on.

In the event of a minor brain injury, it can lead to disruption to the attitude and coordination of muscle movement. The movement becomes uncoordinated, for example, the person is unable to feed the food into his mouth or is unable to button a shirt.

    3. Brainstem (Brain Stem)

The brainstem is inside the skull bone or the base cavity of the head and extends to the spine or spinal cord. This part of the brain regulates basic human functions including breathing, heart rate, regulating body temperature, regulating the digestive process, and is the source of the basic human instinct of fight or flight when danger comes.

The brain stem is also found in animals such as lizards and crocodiles. Therefore, the brain stem is often also called the reptile brain. The reptilian brain regulates "territorial feeling" as a primitive instinct. For example you will feel uncomfortable or threatened when people you do not know are too close to you.

Brain stem consists of three parts, namely :

  • Mesencephalon or Middle Brain (also called Mid Brain) is the top part of the brain stem connecting the Big Brain and Small Brain. The brain is functioning in terms of controlling the response of vision, eye movements, pupils enlargement, regulate body movement and hearing.
  • Medulla oblongata is the starting point of the spinal cord from the left side of the body to the right side of the body, and vice versa. Medulla controls the brain's automatic functions, such as heart rate, blood circulation, breathing, and digestion.
  • Pons is a transmitting station that sends data to the center of the brain along with a reticular formation. Pons that determine whether we are awake or asleep.
  • Note: Certain groups claim that the Middle Brain is associated with supernatural abilities such as seeing with eyes closed. This claim is opposed by scientists and neuroscientists for its unproven and no scientific basis.

    4. Limbic System (Limbic System)

Limbic System or Limbic System The limbic system is located in the center of the brain, encasing the brainstem like a collar. Limbic comes from the Latin meaning collar. This part of the brain is also shared by mammals so often called the mammalian brain. Limbic components include the hypothalamus, thalamus, amygdala, hypocampus and limbic cortex. The limbic system works to generate feelings, regulate hormone production, maintain homeostasis, thirst, hunger, sex drive, pleasure center, metabolism as well as long-term memory.

The most important part of the Limbic System is the hypothalamus whose function is to decide which ones need attention and which are not. Suppose you pay more attention to your own child than to the child of someone you do not know. Why? Because you have a strong emotional connection with your child. Likewise, when you hate someone, you are often noticed or reminded. This happens because you have an emotional connection with the person you hate.

The limbic system stores a lot of information untouched by the senses. It is he who is commonly referred to as the emotional brain or a place of residence of love and honesty. Carl Gustav Jung calls it "the Subconscious" or the collective unconscious, embodied in good manners such as helping people and other sincere behaviors. LeDoux termed this limbic system as a seat for all human passions, a place of love, appreciation and honesty.
