What I Mean by Antagonism

Antagonism is the intentional, negative focus upon the particular radically other that is consciously designed and projected as that which is (consciously, but, perhaps, not subconsciously) undesirable. Antagonism carries the innuendo of resistance; and, insofar as action consciously directs itself in a way consistent with the intent of antagonism, resistance does, prima facie, take place.

The Human Condition as Prophetic Fulfillment.

The enframing of the human experience (if we can draw an analogy between techne as an extra-cogitans appropriating event, and an understanding of intent as consciousness as a vector; manipulable in the sense of being a kind of techne via the leverage of metapsychological awareness) is that of an ongoing self-fulfilling prophecy. That which the human being directs his attention to, in terms of emotional content and the essence of his direct relationships, whether positively or negatively, becomes the reality which he establishes for himself.

The Distinction Between Designed and Unconscious Intent

Intent need not be, and, in fact, rarely is overtly conscious. Here, intention is understood in the phenomenological sense; in the sense that it indicates merely that the mind is directed toward an object. As such, intention is usually prior to consciousness. Only through focus – the self-aware conscious choice vis a vis intent – can intent ever be conscious; mostly it occurs without us even becoming aware of it. Intention is always a means of participation in the dasein – and usually, we are appropriated to it; we do not, ourselves, consciously direct it in most cases.

Antagonism as Intent

That which we intend comes into being in our experience of the dasein. Emotional content and direct relationships emerge as we clear being in such a way as to draw out the radically other in a way determined by the projection which we establish by our intent. In this way, that which we determine within ourselves to resist becomes a part of our experience – and since we are not distinct from our experience; since it appropriates and draws us to itself, what we resist, in the end, becomes us.

The Conscious Manipulation of Antagonism for One’s Own Ends

If one is aware of the condition of mankind; that intent, whether conscious or not, determines the trajectory of the enframing of our lives; and that antagonism is a powerful, highly focused form of intent; then one may choose to do battle with one’s goal. One can then achieve it in a far more thorough and intimate way than one would if one merely chose to forgo resistance and allow one’s desire to come into one’s experience. Antagonism inspires and intensity of the focus. This can be a powerful tool in the hands of one who is truly a master of himself.
