Why Social Media Is Addictive!
Social Seduction!
Society needs to understand that social media attempts to replicate reality. As a result platforms such as Facebook and Instagram need to manipulate your psychology, so that you spend as much of your time online.
How does social media seduce you?
Facebook, for example, incorporates features such as 'Likes' and 'Comments', which creates a false sense that the user has a voice (power).
In reality, these features deceive you into thinking that your time on Facebook is valued. Therefore, each user spends more hours on Facebook each day, because it offers you instant gratification.
Social Power!
The whole world is reported to be online by 2020 according to Eric Schmidt, Google Chairman. This means that more people will be pressured to use social media, because everyone will be online.
Also, smartphones are literally in everyone's possession, so it creates even more of an incentive to use apps such as Snapchat and Twitter. And as we move into a world of digital money (i.e. Bitcoin), owning a smartphone is a necessity in 2017.
Conclusion
- Social Media is a powerful force.
- By 2020 the whole world will be online.
- Our friends & family influence us to use social media.
I do think that social media is a misnomer. It is not really that social, but I agree with you that it is addictive and give instant gratification. Also, strong psychological forces, such as the reciprocity rule, makes you invest more time etc. Steemit has the potential to be even more addictive as there is an economic incentive as well.
Hi janusface,
Your so right! Steemit is addictive because of the economic incentive.
Thanks for teaching me new ideas!
I was talking to a (super successful) older gentleman today and he was complaining that most people don't know how to be social anymore.
I'm curious about this, and wonder if we're just opening up a new channel that many of us don't fully understand yet, but one that allows us to be way more social than before, just in a different way.
For example, I've "met" tons of people on Steemit who I would never have met had it not been for this network. It makes me think about what we really know.
Not saying it's right or wrong, but definitely an avenue worth exploring. Thanks for the post!
Hi Paleo Treats,
Your so right :)
Social media is a different form of communication, and it changes faster than ever.
In the future, social media will incorporate VR (virtual Reality) & AR (Augmented Reality).
