How do colors influence learning?

in #psychology6 years ago

Learning is a very broad field and there is so much information on these topics that it is difficult to know where to start. What is quite evident, however, is that color plays a key role in creating an environment that encourages learning.

What colors promote learning? What colors could be annoying or distract the students? And how can we mitigate that risk?

If you are still not convinced that color is so important in design, think about the following: What would happen if I told you that color, as part of the electromagnetic spectrum, is an energy wave, which has its own magnetic frequency? What if I told you that colors can affect neurological pathways in the brain? And what can create a biochemical response? Dr. Robert Gerard recognizes this and has been a pioneer in this research, in which he suggests that each color has a specific wavelength and each of them affects our body and brain in a different way.

Using the right color, as well as the right combination and placement can greatly affect the emotions, attention and behavior of people when they are learning. Even research with Alzheimer's patients has shown that color improves memory and that students remember color images more easily than black and white images, amazing, right?

"Keep in mind, of course, that this is not a definitive science, it may be that you are afraid of blue because you are afraid of water from a young age - there are unique elements when selecting a color. Talking here is a broad approach that will help us with most of the students. "

  • Green: Concentration: You probably already know this, just by taking a look at a forest or a field, your mind achieves greater concentration and harmony. This is because low-wavelength colors, such as green, promote calm, and improve efficiency and concentration.

That's why green is an excellent color to improve the concentration of your students in eLearning courses. Besides, green is one of the most relaxing colors for the eyes, as it reminds us of nature. That is why the television stars remain in the "green room", since it is a space for relaxation.

Green is a good color to maintain concentration and long-term clarity, making it a good choice for an office - instead of red, which is seen as stimulating and exciting. Maybe this helps in the short term, but the stimulation tends to decrease over time.

  • Orange: Courage: Think of the sunset orange on the horizon. Pretty, right? It is true, the color orange can be a cozy color and raise the mood of the students, as well as promote comfort and improve neuronal functioning.

Some theorists argue that an orange-colored environment increases the oxygen supply to the brain, promotes the stimulation of mental activity, while at the same time loosening inhibitions of people. An increase in oxygen supply also leads to a feeling of strength and energy to do things. Some have even suggested that testing classes should be painted orange to stimulate the minds of the students.

Orange should be used sparingly and in small doses. Many studies have found that when it is used to highlight a specific function or part of the content on the screen, the attention levels of the students increase. Therefore, we can say that when you are looking to highlight certain facts or important information, the color orange may be the ideal option.

  • Blue: Productivity: Blue is the best option to learn difficult or complicated subjects. The blue color can be used to help improve reading comprehension as well. Blue, in general, is a relaxing and soothing color, the lighter shades are more friendly to the eye, while the darker ones are more sober and serious.

Many psychologists recommend the use of blue, and combine it with another color such as orange, especially to highlight information (as we mentioned above).

After 2 years the child begins to use colors to describe objects ("that shirt is pink") and to express their preferences ("I like blue"). Although it does not seem so, it is a very complex process: the eye has to capture the light and transform it into electrical impulses that the brain translates as colors and then, the child has to learn to identify each one and associate it with the appropriate word.
