Fear of visiting dentists is one of the most common fears people have. I think adults are more affected with this phobia than the children. Younger one's might fear to visit dentists at first but their fear is most likely gone after one/two visit, as far I've seen.
An important difference between a simple state of nervousness and having dental fear will be the frequency in which the individual actively avoids going to the dentist even though doing that visit is badly needed.
I liked how u point out the difference and also that example with airplane journeys. Thanks for explaining though.

Perhaps they are, because children might be scared simply because they don't understand the noises and what is being done, and if an adult is scared then that could because of a past bad experience.
