Stay the course...
Today I did some stuff, I stood tall, confident and responsible. I did what was required and although it wasn't easy I did it anyway. I owned it! Today was a good day and it reminded me of a quote I came across some time ago. I have it printed in A3 size and pinned next to my desk. I read it a lot and live it more. It goes like this:
Be a fucking lion
Take no shit
SET GOALS
SMASH THEM
Eat people’s faces off
Be a better person
Show people who the fuck you are
Never apologise for being awesome
Stay the mother fucking course!

I like how "Be a better person" is in there with everything else. Seems contradictory to the rest, but makes you remember that having confidence doesn't mean you get to be a dick.
It's interesting how people see things differently isn't it? I read the quote and feel that [for me] it relates to the inner me, inward confidence etc. I feel that it means to find the ability to stand alone and unafraid (like a wolf) find the courage to do so (like a lion). Don't bring shit (negativity) into your life, SET GOALS, SMASH THEM, be your best as often as you can be (eat people's faces off/be a better person, DESPITE other people), Demonstrate your quality, (show people who you are), don't apologise for your hard work and effort and the reward it brings (don't apologise for being awesome), and stay on track, follow those goals and your plan. Write your own destiny and desire. (Stay the course.)
That's my spin on it. It's not about being aggressive or anti social, or ignorant, egotistical or narcissistic. That's how I see it anyway. Everyone will see it their way though.

I think I have more confidence than I need. Plenty to go around lol. So I typically see being even more confident as being bashful and rude. I've worked for a very long time to be more considerate and caring, or less of a dick.
Like you say, interpretation is everything. Often people look past the intended message and see what they were looking for instead. I feel like I do that more often than I would like to.
