That's what we call Reverse Psychology
Reverse psychology is a technique where you get somebody do something you want by suggesting that they do the opposite.
A common form of this technique is to forbid an action. Just like I did: when you say 'do not X' you are also implanting the suggestion to do X. (In my case not clicking this post ).
Control is a deep, deep need
The deepest need people have is for a sense of control. When we feel out of control, we experience a powerful and uncomfortable tension between the need for control and the evidence of inadequate control.
This is why reverse psychology works !
People who feel their sense of control is being taken away , will eventually grab it back by not doing what they are asked. And because of ''Control'' need This can even be actions that are clearly against their best interests,for example you can get a shy male friend to ask a girl out if you suggests that he is just not interested in girls. he will ask her out sooner or later even though it's clearly out of his comfort zone.
Also, Because of our different ''levels" of needs reverse psychology is more likely to be successful with people who have a high need for control.
There is a danger of reverse psychology backfiring, for example when the person realizes that you are trying to "manipulate" and control them to impetuously follow your suggestion. he will follow your suggestion as a revenge.
A Lot of politicians use a commun simple trick to show that they are in control ! they ask the guest if he wants coffee then give him coffee anyway !
Another danger in this technique is that often there is more than one alternative to what you are suggesting and the person chooses just something else rather than what you intended.
