The Realities of Hypnotizing People

At the end of last year, a former Ohio attorney was arrested, charged, and inevitably sentenced to 12 years in prison after it was claimed that he hypnotized his female clients for purposes of sexual gratification. The case is alarming for a number of reasons, one of them being that this man was able to hypnotize these woman, one of them a judge, in the daytime which is when you would think the women would be most alert, and he did it in a public setting; though no one else had noticed. And he was able to do it numerous times successfully.

You might find yourself thinking “that would never happen to me” or “I'd never let anyone hypnotize me” but clearly it can happen even if you don't intend to allow it.

Hypnosis is used currently in the setting for some psychological therapy treatments etc and this is why there are licensed hypnotherapists out there who practice this act in a safe setting. And many of us have heard the stories about drunk people supposedly being hypnotized at venues in Vegas, but you don't very often hear about sinister hypnosis events like this one with the lawyer and his victims.

This case highlights the alarming ease with which someone might be able to hypnotize another.

That hasn't been the only incident either. Back in 2012, a Principal in Florida was charged after he was accused of hypnotizing students who ended-up committing suicide. And it wasn't just the students either, at least 100 adults also claimed to have been hypnotized by Dr. George Kenney and they were either parents in the community or among the school's staff.

Creepy Much?

CCTV footage in Lampung, Indonesia, also caught people a few years ago trying to use hypnosis in order to try and rob others. The CCTV footage gave the police what they needed to go after them, the media dubbed them the "hypnotic criminals" and they would approach people again in daylight, offering help, only to try and victimize them. Not only that, but the police in Indonesia have also turned to hypnosis in order to try and interview terrorists, and they've even allegedly had the practice taught to their military.

There really are cases and incidents around the world where different people have tried to use hypnosis for one reason or another. People around the world use hypnosis for a variety of things like trying to quit smoking or to lose weight, to work on their fears and phobias, and more. But then there are also those cases where the practice has been employed to either physically abuse or steal from victims.

And those victims might have also thought that it “couldn't happen” to them.

In the circumstance with the lawyer from Ohio, one woman was simply going to a legal meeting and that was enough to put her into a passive state to where she could be vicitimzed. We see that victims have been children, students, parents, teachers, judges, legal clients etc, there have been a number of settings that allowed for the vulnerability and threat to occur.

The hypnotized state is described as being one that is very relaxed, yet one where you are extremely alert. Some hypnotherapists maintain that most of the population isn't susceptible to this sort of event occurring, and that most people would just 'snap out of it' if it were to happen to them. But as we have seen from past news coverage, it's happened to a number of different people young and old, different races, different intelligence levels etc.
