Linking Personality Types To Smartphone Choices

in #psychology8 years ago (edited)

Researchers at Lancaster University recently sought to investigate the link between different smartphone choices and their possible association with varying personality types.

They discovered that android users are likely to be more honest than iPhone users, among other differences. And they've published their findings in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking.

Psychologists say that today the cellphone (or smartphone) can easily become an extension of ourselves and therefore our personality and they think that this means that the choice of phone that we go with might be able to tell us a little bit about who we are.

The study looked at over 500 smartphone users and required them to answer questions about their attitudes toward their mobile phone and questions about themselves.

They found that iPhone users are more likely to be: female, younger, view their phone as a status object, and be extroverted.

Compare that to Android users which they found more often than not were: male, more agreeable, older, more honest, and less interested in wealth and status.

Researchers say that thanks to this study, they can now view the choice of a smartphone as a possibly useful tool in helping to provide a clue for predicting individual personality characteristics. After the first study, they followed it up with a second one which involved developing a computer program that was able to predict what type of smartphone people owned, based off of the differences that they found between Android and iPhone users.

It's estimated that roughly 4 billion Android smartphones have been sold around the world. Compared to an estimated 700 million iPhones which have already been sold to date. For Android's 4 billion, that's about $74 billion in revenue for them and that comes from their estimated 61-81 percent market share.
