Fantasy Or Reality ?

Do children enjoy coming up with make-believe characters and spending time dreaming-up and living in their own fantasy world, more than they value trying to help assist their parents with practical tasks?

According to a study that was published several months ago in the journal Developmental Science, it might not always be accurate to assume that the a child is going to naturally find fantasy play more appealing.

Their study revealed that for kids who were between the ages of 3 to 6 that they preferred engaging in real activities as opposed to fantasy-related activities.

They investigated the preschoolers' preference for a variety of different activities that were either deemed to be a pretend or real activity. They tested at least 100 children, between the ages of 3 and 6 years old, and found that they overwhelmingly preferred to engage in the real activities instead.

In their study they showed the children pairs of photographs and in 1 photo they would see a child engaged in a behavior like talking on the phone or cutting vegetables and then in the 2nd photo they saw a child pretending to do what the kid in the 1st photo was doing.

So when asked if they would choose to either really cut vegetables or pretend to cut vegetables, they selected the real activity.

Perhaps so many of them decided to choose the real activity because pretending to cut vegetables isn't all that fun. The fantasy options couldn't really compare, could they? Though when asked why they selected the real activities, the kids expressed reasoning such as wanting to learn a new practical skill. The kids also saw the hands-on activities as being fun.

In a follow-up study, that included 16 participants that were between ages 3 to 6, which also investigated the preference for either real or fantasy play, the kids again selected the real activities.

For that follow-up study, the participants had been given an option of choosing between real objects to spend time playing with, or they could choose toy versions of the same object (fantasy option) to play with.

Did they want to play with a real microscope? Or did they want to play with a toy microscope? And researchers saw that their preference for going with the real activities would increase with their age.

Researchers say that the findings support the notion that children crave and need real and practical experiences and not just fantasy play time. And that perhaps there has been too much focus and attention placed on the importance of fantasy play time for kids.

A number of researchers have previously asserted that fantasy play is highly overrated and there are always going to be some who don't believe that it's important to foster childhood fantasy play or that it could provide any sort of benefit to the life of the child.

Aside from the critics however, there are a number of researchers who still insist that fantasy play time is a valuable ingredient to foster social and emotional child development.

Fantasy play time for children has been said to help to provide a variety of possible benefits. It might help them to develop problem-solving skills; they can use their imagination to try and come up with a solution to the different problems that they might face. It can also enable a child to address and face their own fears and can give them the tools so that they can construct their own vision for their aspirations and dreams that they might have.

I personally want my son , when he gets older , to experience other things such as things that would enhance his learning skills . When I was little , I used to build puzzles , make play building games. I want children to realize the reality of life and enhance their brain . I know it sounds mean but things that don’t exists should not be taught

I agree , Fantasy play time is great for developing problem solving skills ! Cool and different post @doitvoluntarily ! thanks for sharing with us !! upped and resteemed !😀👍👍👍✌💕

interesting... similar to another research I've heard before: children only learn to speak by listening the words from real like conversion, yet if you play videos to them showing the same vocabulary, they won't learn it.

In my opinion children will choose the practical activities more than fantasy world because brain of children will be at growing stage and they will engage more into practical world, in my opinion most of adults think about fantasy world because their brain is grown to fullest level and they have vision for particular situations so, adults can live more in fantasy world if they don't like the practical things or something is going against them in practical things. Thanks for sharing this post with us. 🙂

Stay Blessed.

It seems like the experiments are not good enough to prove the points. What if you asked them to choose whether to dress up in a real super hero costume, or just imagine dressing up. Of course most people would dress up if the option is there! Its fun! But the fact is you are still left imagining things afterwards, on either outcome.

If there is no imaginational option compared with the hands on normal options where you can fill your brain with more input, any curious mind would pick the normal options. If you started telling a story about how the fake hammer is magical, and could take you to mystical places... I wonder how many kids would chose the fake hammer option ... Interesting stuff! Good read :D

This is one of those times when psychologists are missing the forest for the trees... because they don't know what a forest is.

This is one of those times that assuming a blank slate means they will never understand why their findings are as they are.

I agree with you very accurate information I have a 4 year old daughter. he rather chooses to make cookies instead of making cookies from game dough. In this respect we are both enjoying and communicating. the letter is very useful. thank you.

I am the father of three children and the grandfather of two grandchildren, and their behaviors varied according to their upbringing. my eldest son to be alone, played more with fantasy games, while the next two played with real games, today my grandchildren to be only repeats the form of fantasy game.
My granddaughter Abigail invents scenario and recreates places that she sees in fiction, it's not bad for children to play fantasy games, in my opinion they stimulate their imaginations
Excelnte post dear friend @doitvoluntarily, thank you very much for sharing
I wish you a beautiful saturday

Wow, this is a lovely and an awesome analysis, and post. Children are real and needs practical materials/gadgets It enables a child to address and face his own fears and can give him the tools so that he can construct his own vision for his aspirations and dreams that he might have. - @doitvoluntarily

Thank you for this amazing post, it summarizes very nicely of what is going on here on steemit, at least of what I managed to observe myself too. And while there is a lot of unfair action going on and maybe a bit too much than it should be, every day I am fascinated of how much good and interesting content is being put out here. Also, this platform lets you observe how people grow in ways of expressing themselves and finding their own niche
