If an intelligent sadist knew he was being tested to see if he is a sadist or not, then he could easily lie in the test in order to pretend to be like a normal person.
That's right! The participants were conscious during the experiment. But accepting to be 'crushing' the bugs was a small 'indicator'. Some of them couldn't bring themselves to do that.
