Becoming Aware

Becoming aware is the process in which you (your being) is separated from your mind (your mental conditioning). If you have little or no awareness, you would be under the illusion that you are your mind. Your mind is actually just mental programming/conditioning made up of habitual thoughts, beliefs and thinking patterns.

We don’t choose our own conditioning, it is programmed into us at a young age by our environment. We use this conditioning as a platform to help us understand the world that we are living in. The problem arises when the world that we are living in (which has conditioned our minds) is not aligned with our true nature.

We can never be totally cut off from our natural feeling of well-being but every delusional thought or belief that we hold takes us further away from it.

Lets look at an example;

If someone had a belief (a thought that they hold to be true) that they need money/power/love to be happy, then they would try desperately to attain those things. The stronger the need (bigger the delusion), the harder they would try to the point where they would get so caught up in it that it would inevitably cause them stress and suffering.

So I ask you now, what is the root cause of the suffering? It’s the belief that caused the deluded desire/need for something in our external realities for us to be happy.

Our natural state of being is one of a calm content nature. The need for something exterior to happen for us to attain this feeling is simply not true. It is a lie that is living on in our heads protected only by the fact that we are unaware of it.

Here is a list of things that will happen as you become aware;

  • You begin to see your mind in action
  • You begin to see what triggers different feelings and thought patterns inside you
  • You begin to make connections between what you think and how it affects the way you feel
  • You begin to see the habitual nature of the mind
  • You notice how it generalizes everything to fit in with its view of the world (its conditioning)
  • You begin to see through the deluded nature of some of the thoughts and beliefs that you hold
  • You notice your habitual feelings
  • You begin to see your mind (mental conditioning) as a separate entity to you.

Becoming aware takes time and it runs very deep. You will have huge realizations and moments of clarity only for your mind to kick back in and take over. This is part of the process and a sign that progress is being made. Take it easy and be patient, if you understood how ‘deep’ this goes, you would understand that it is a process that takes time. As your awareness grows, it will slowly but surely start to free you from the grips of the mind as you let go and stop believing and identifying with these feelings and beliefs.

Your article supports the research the mindfulness is a big motivator for over all happiness. I'm glad you are mentioning this research.

Great post @conditionedminds! When we begin to observe ourselves, we become aware that so many of the things we fear & feel powerless before are just made up. We give so much of our power away, afraid to rock the boat or to give up what we believe is keeping us safe. But as you noted, we actually get our sense of security from within, not from external sources. As long as we depend on external sources, we will always be powerless. And since SteemIt is all about reclaiming our independence and power, we need to be willing to release our dependence on those external props.
