Researchers Conduct Study of Ayahuasca's Effect on Lab Grown Mini-Brains 💊🔬🇧🇷

in #psychedelic7 years ago

A new study from Scientific Reports, that aimed to study ayahuasca’s effect on cerebral organoids (lab-grown min-brain), was conducted by a team of Brazilian researchers. The cerebral organoids more resemble a brain of a 3-4 month old embryo brain and were grown for 45 days before being split into different groups. In the 3 groups, each were bathed with a different substance. One with a compound (5-MeO-DMT) isolated from the psychedelic substance ayahuasca, one in alcohol, and the final control group bathed in a normal medium. The researchers analyzed the amount and type of proteins present in the organoids to gauge the results. In the ayahuasca group, they found more proteins associated with the foundations of memory, and anti inflammatory properties, which researchers are interpreting as a potential antidepressant. Although this scientific analysis is not an accurate interpretation of the effect of psychedelics on a fully developed human brain, it does have promise for upcoming psychedelic research in this new age of psychedelic renaissance.
