AFRICAN PROVERB: “One-quarter of what you eat keeps you alive. The other three-quarters keeps your doctors alive”
MEANING/EXPLANATION:
This ancient Egyptian proverb is not to be taken literally. It uses exaggeration to make a point in a way that would be hard to forget. It simply means one who cares for his or body, controls how much the doctors gets over paid. For most of us , a significant proportion of our food we eat is unnecessary, so to speak.

This is because we try to satisfy wants instead of the needs for our body. We eat to satisfy our appetite instead. Truth be told, we can be filled and still have a strong appetite for food. And we can have no appetite for food on an empty stomach. That means we cannot trust our appetite since it’s not always accurate. In Nigeria they say “The death that will kill a man begins as an appetite”. It seems to us that eating or keeping healthy cost a lot, but actually the opposite is true. It cost more to cure than it does to keep our body. Prevention is always better than cure. The comparison is analogous to education and ignorance. The cost of ignorance is more than the cost of education. Remember that we don’t always get the chance to correct our mistakes. Be health-conscious!
