New Jerusalem - A Three State Solution

Are you tired of the situation in the Middle-East?

A situation where two peoples have been fighting over the same land?

How the Palestine that was has been eroded and forsaken to the benefit of the Israel that has come to be?

How some people will find that last statement (and every statement in between) to be offensive because they've made outrage into an Olympic sport?

Well in recent weeks and months the focus has turned upon Jerusalem - a city that both Israelis and Palestinians lay a claim to - and whom both would lay a claim to being for their own exclusively.

I'll be blunt. I have swung around in perspective on this matter (generally but not always in favour of the Palestinians - full disclosure) ever since Queen was still rocking, and about as often as people are expected to change jobs (a duration measured in months).

As such, I am very tired - but at the same time I've begrudgingly come to the conclusion that there is no easy answer.

While a part of me would certainly like to see a relocation of self-proclaimed Israelis, specifically Zionists, to more conservative and constrained borders (perhaps akin to spaces that they seem to feel are too generous with regard to Palestinians with respect to the West Bank and Gaza Strips respectively)...

...I grudgingly concede that such would be both undiplomatic as well as inflammatory. Plus there is the element of fairness to consider - to those whom are actually innocent of the cudgel that has been active within those disputed borders.

No... that would not do at all - and both sides would both agree and toss things less savory than streamers and confetti in my general direction (some out of habit and some out of genuine indignation).

So... right... something else needs to be considered...

And that something which is gaining the favour of the grey matter within my mind is the notion of a three state solution.

A state of Israel and a state of Palestine.

Also a state of Jerusalem.

Say What?

It is not as inconceivable as one might think.

Micro States are a thing and have been a thing for a long time.

And none are more famous than 'Vatican City'.

While the variables upon the ground differ - the prospect of the establishing of a three state solution can be engineered with the specific aim of promoting the kind of stability and equitability to permit the flourishing of non-tyrannical Statehood.

A Tale of Two Irreconcilable Peoples

I am a foolish person for whom hope always trickles down from up high.

And that hope, while often stamped out when considering the happenings in that at-times seemingly forsaken nation, still spurts forth like the most stubborn of weeds.

In my limited remote observations of the situation, I have come to the very obvious conclusion that a major factor spurning on the conflicts is the fact that there is a clear polar antagonism at play - an 'Us versus Them' mentality supremely embedded in the minds of Israelis and Palestinians alike - a mutual distrust, disrespect and hatred written in the blood of those, combatants and innocents, who have fallen.

It is like putting two natural competitors into the same cage (and this cage is so small as to make evasion an improbability). They will attack each other until one is no longer. Barbaric and base the motives - spurned on by words written and spoken, and experiences and beliefs alike.

And of course there is no balance in this conflict - and it is often a one-sided affair.

This 'right-through-might' affair needs to come to an end.

A State Interfacing Two Peoples

It shall not be easy - and it shall involve the rise of a new, 'third' State.

This State shall comprise of the entire city of Jerusalem, also surrounding annexed territories.

The territory shall overlap current Palestinian territory by 15% (annexed lands included) with any annexed land not falling within this perimeter defaulting back to Palestine.

The territory shall extend West of Jerusalem, along the territorial division, to similarly overlap Palestinian territory (annexed lands included) with any annexed land not falling within this perimeter defaulting back to Palestine.

The territory shall also extend and overlap South West of Jerusalem, along the territorial division, down to the vicinity of Qiryat Gat.

All territorial overlaps into Palestinian territory shall be reciprocated in the form of overlaps into Israeli territories - at 15% depth unless otherwise stated below.

From the Southern point, this territory shall extend Westward to unify and similarly overlap with the Gaza Strip.

The depth of this strip shall average the equivalent of the average of the width of the Gaza Strip.

And as I grow more aware of the implications of 'Zoning' Palestinian territories to make it seem larger - I'd desire to see those bits of Zones A and B united - with less political 'division' being engineered beneath peoples' noses.

Have You Gone Mad? That Will Divide Israel!

Every measure shall be taken to ensure that this is not so.

Within the third State's territories there shall exist a corridor of free-passage with priority to Israelis - both with respect to retaining the North-South connection - as well as retaining a direct link with Jerusalem itself - itself included within such zone of free passage.

Within the third State's territories also there shall exist a corridor of free-passage with priority to Palestinians - both with respect to re-establishing a West-East connection - as well as retaining a direct link with Jerusalem itself - itself included within such zone of free passage. These passages shall be separate except where unavoidable - these zones including the area of Jerusalem itself - as well as a couple of road connections.

Really Now... And Who Shall Govern?

Governance of 'New Jerusalem' shall fall to a tri-lateral committee.

Two parts Israeli.

Two parts Palestinian.

One part UN.

Perhaps it is time for the United Nations to take on a more direct role in the Statesmanship of this troubled nation. How many unresolved UN resolutions are there with respect to Israel? 225 or so? Well from within those borders the UN 'should' be in a position of greater accountability. The UN's stake and presence within the land would also serve to mitigate misinformation about happeneings within those borders, and would provide justification for a modest UN peacekeeping core in the territory.

With a UN presence any emnity that might normally flare betwen the two diametrically opposed factions might be curtailed sufficiently as to smooth future Israli-Palestinian relations. New Jerusalem would itself be a buffer zone between more contested territories, a section of land where both Israelis and Palestinians have relatively free passage of movement.

Further to this, within these territories, corridors of priority may be identified allowing for the white-listed transfer of people and goods along them with a minimum in red tape or incident.

With a link restored between the West Bank and Gaza - imposed isolation would be mitigated and new trade routes with the Mediterranean would improve the economic stability of the Palestinian territories.

You Are Dreaming if You Think They Will Go For That!

I would consider myself a lot more restricted in my writings were I only to write what I think that people would approve of. Already I feel that I am engaging in a degree of self-censorship - but not all topics warrant a perpetual process of improvement before reveal. For some things - like two peoples at war - ideas need to flow even if they are far from perfect. One just need rest assured that that which one proposes is indeed superior or otherwise preferable to the shoddy and tragic situation which currently is.

I am honestly tired of hearing about the suffering of people unable to feel safe in their own homes because their roots condemn them to a life of being hounded within familiar borders.
