My Promo-Mentors Writing Challenge | Procrastination Kills

in #promomentors-challenge6 years ago (edited)

There are perks in working from home. In my case, blogging is what I consider to be a job that has been, for want of a better word, perkful. I also do other freelancing jobs on the side, both giving me the luxury to earn a living from the comforts of my home. However, it's not all rainbows and butterflies. Sooner or later, things start to turn nasty.

Which brings me to an understanding:

That feeling of comfort becomes too much.

Too much to handle, in fact, to the point of setting tasks aside for a "moment". And you know what happens. The moment of minutes becomes hours; hours become days. That's when I realize, "@*#$#! I'm dead!"

You might be thinking:

“Oh, c'mon. It’s just a matter of time management and making things happen.”

But then again, there are limitations, and the limitations have got to do with one’s personality. My personality being the easily distracted type, I might even have an attention span of a 3-year-old.

Procrastination is one of the biggest hurdles that many of us experience at least once in a lifetime. It brings clout in the way we do things, and could be the main factor that makes success far from attainable.

It is self-inflicted pain that causes irreversible damage to your schedule, and, worse, a rift in the time that you spend for your family. It is rather an improved version of sloth, though the latter may be the worst of its kind. Procrastination is the cause of the unexpected, unwanted, undesirable effects of failure.

The sad part?

It becomes a habit, mañana habit, if I have to add the Spanish-Filipino version of the term. Procrastination becomes a part of your daily routine, a part of who you are. It consumes you bit by bit, day by day, like a virus that paralyzes you from doing what you need to do.

I’d have to say again, with more conviction this time, that procrastination does kill.

But how do you stop the killer before it gets you?

Don’t fret, fellow procrastinators! Recognizing there’s a problem is already a solution in itself, so we’re okay. But a more tangible solution is -- one word -- focus.

  • Focus on priorities;
  • Focus on what is important;
  • Focus on the goals;
  • Focus on success.

Losing focus is the primary motivator of procrastination. When you divert your attention from the most important in your list of priorities, you get caught in the trap that you made until you just allow yourself to freefall into the deep abyss of regret.

Having said that, sacrifice is key, as it has always been. Let us not lose focus. Or maybe, we can just forget about comfort for the time being. It doesn't hurt if we do. Instead, focus on the bigger picture and the reward could be endless.
