VIDEO: Steemit as a community (social media community) explained
In this video, I talked about the community aspect of steemit being a social media community.
Excerpt from the video
The other two words; social and media seems not to be an uncommon word in our age (the social media age). Almost every inhabitant of the earth is one way related to the social media using phones, tv's and social media websites like facebook twitter. However, not everyone understands what the word community means. Even the average land/house owner in Nigeria here just attend community meetings without truly understand what community is, the essence of community and the spirit of community (a word coined by me). Although we were taught about community and other core topics like citizenship, family, and culture in social studies at the primary stage of education in Nigeria which might be different to the lower level of education in other countries.
But using Wikipedia definition, a community could be defined as a group of people in a geographical location with a COMMON GOAL, IDENTITY, AND IDEA.
For instance, the steemit community is made up of different people from different countries all in a bid to achieve a common goal (the primary purpose of creating steemit). There is always a reason behind establishing something of which community is not left out which is still traced to the founder of such community. If you are conversant with any of @dan or@ ned article/writing, you will notice the main idea of creating steemit is to HELP; you are being helped, and you also help others which goes beyond payouts and money. Hence the achievement of the common goals relies on every member of the community.
Personally, breaking the word COMMUNITY, we could have two-word COMMUNE AND UNITY. Analyzing the two words, you will see that communication is necessary for any community. Without interaction, there will be no community and where there is no communication there undoubtedly will be no unity. And where there is no agreement, the common goal of such community will not be fulfilled. For instance, here on the steemit network, the first thing a newbie is told to do is to interact by commenting on other steemians post (communication) because it is the basis of the steemit network. A relationship is the primary currency of the steemit system and with it only can we achieve the common goal of the steemit network.
One thing we should also know is that making is not as important as making the right communication to a community. Using steemit as an example, you would realize some steemians are making comments/ communications but not the right ones (spam comments and begging for upvotes in discord and steemit Dm's). All these eventually lead to disunity hindering the achievement of the community shared goal.
Community Services and Developments
One thing we should also understand is that the community common goals are always large hence the need to be broken down into smaller portions thus making the purposes easy to be achieved. Also, the fulfillment of the common goal depends on every member of the community which explains why we have different projects aimed at helping people on the network and those outside the system (charity projects) at this moment fulfilling the goal of the community. All this are referred to community services and development.
Community meetings (MEETUPS)
Also, community meetings are necessary to achieve the community goals, and such meetings are referred to as MEET-UPS on the steemit network. This meeting seeks to educate the community members on the common goal and foster communication and socialization which meetups on the steemit network are fulfilling efficiently.
So am using this medium to invite you to the efficiently Ibadan meetup to familiarize yourself with the common goal of the steemit network and steemians.
