Hello!
Welcome to the very first of many subsequent expositions on MUSIC.
Before we dive into terms or terminologies, techniques, simplicity, complexity and other various stuffs or aspect there is to the magnanimous nature of music, it is expedient to lay a proper foundation so that all(the musical and the non-musical-is anyone non-musical?, maybe. Smiles) can follow through to the top where we are headed. SO SIT TIGHT AS WE TAKE A RIDE ON THIS MELODIOUS JOURNEY.

GENERALLY
You will agree with me that MUSIC is one most effective aspect of life. Nearly everyone in one way or the other expresses great interest in music and in most cases, a particular style to which they are many a time invariably partial.

WHAT IS MUSIC
In general, MUSIC is the melody(tune, or arrangement of sounds that make up a musical phrase or sentence) of sound that unify the mind and soul. In simpler terms, MUSIC IS A FORM OF ARRANGED SOUND THAT IS PLEASING TO THE EAR. Therfore, music is so strong even beyond the barriers of language. Also, some of our deepest emotions may be brought on by music.
In mordern age, MUSIC is like EVERYTHING!, we hear music around us like almost every moment, and in various forms and/or means like radio, TV, ipods, e.t.c. Music has various forms, aspect or elements, from Music Production, Music composition, Music Theory to Dynamics, e.t.c. Therefore, to appreciate music, it is necessary to understand its working at least to some extent. Hence, to this effect, there are basically five elements that can suffice, namely;

• Melody
• Harmony
• Key
• Metre
• Rhythm

MELODY
A tune or arrangement /sequence of sounds that make up a musical phrase/sentence. Technically, they are series of notes organised to form a pattern or shape. Example:
let "waking up in the morning" be a "note", "having breakfast" another "note", and "going to work" be a "note". If we arrange these activities(notes) in which ever way/order(ascending, descending, importance, e.t.c), we can say we have a "MELODY OF ACTIVITIES" or MELODY
Therefore, MELODY = NOTE PLUS TIME.

HARMONY
Harmony means to agree. Therefore, in music,this is the combination of two or more notes simultaneously to produce pleasing sounds. Harmony are usually in groups of three notes(chords or triads) that blend with and support the melody. Example:
let "going to work" be a note, "provision of food" and "provision of shelter" be other notes respectively, we can say that "provision of food and shelter" is in harmony with "going to work", since working can provide food and shelter. Therfore they blend or are in HARMONY.

KEY
This is a way of grouping notes into colonies or families. Notes in a family have certain "gene in common. This section will be explored in detail later.

METRE
This simply refers to beats, usually recurring at regular intervals. This usually underpins and organises the elements of time within a song/music. This is also referred to as TIME SIGNATURE and will be explored in detail later.

RHYTHM
This is sometimes synonymous to THE METRE, but in essence, it is a term that describes the way time is applied to music.
