A Child's Sight #Infantile Glaucoma

From the very minute of conception till adolescence children are faced with lots of health risk, from mal-development in the womb, six killer childhood diseases, malaria and a whole lot more. In the eyecare industry too there are lots of threats that the child faces or goes through one the most serious ones we are going to talk about is infantile glaucoma. Certainly by now most of our readers are familiar with the term glaucoma and would probably wondering how and innocent little cute and cuddly baby would be susceptible to this pathological condition.

What happens is that sometimes just like mal-development of some organs or tissues in the body the part of the Child eye which ia supposed to drained the fluid in the eye or better still regulate the outflow which is known as the trabecular meshwork is blocked. There are two routes of drainage though however that of the uvea is not powerful to accomodate the volume need hence they is a sharp rise in introcular pressure in the baby's eye, this puts lots of pressure in the eye and because it is very fragile and malleabe at this stage the eye extends to accomodate the pressure resulting in what is otherwise known as Buphthalmos, the cornea becomes bluish due to inadequate oxyen supply and the cornea starts giving striations. The condition is an emergency case thus if the pressure is not release within the shortest possible time this child may end up never getting a sight in the first place. Luckily most of the cases of infantile glaucoma are seen quuckly by the midwives and ophthalmologist at the hospital, nonetheless if you shouod notice any of these signs with your baby do well to quickly visit your eyecare specialist to find out what may be wrong.
