THE "SATURDAY MOTHERS" MANIFESTED THE FIRST OF SEPTEMBER

«Saturday Mothers» is a group of women, mothers of the disappeared, who have been expressing their thoughts every week for more than 20 years. They were inspired by the "Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo" movement, which fought for the victims of cases of disappearance during the Argentine dictatorship from 1976 to 1983. Turkey experienced an intense period in the 1980s and 1990s, when security forces clashed with the Kurdish guerrillas of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the south-east of the country, as well as extreme left groups.

Weekly, since May 27th, 1995, the "Saturday Mothers" meet peacefully in the center of Istanbul with yellowish photos of their missing loved ones.

On August 25th, the police dispersed the mothers, in their number 700 demonstration, with hoses of pressure water and tear gas grenades; Several figures of this association were briefly detained, which provoked a wave of indignation. The past September 1st was hindered again. Today, the "Saturday Mothers" fear that the president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will turn his back on his cause. However, despite the prohibition to manifest, mothers do not want to abandon their goal.
