They say they COBOL developers make a lot of money because a lot of old banking systems still depend on it but there are not many people left who know the language. But I'm not sure that would be worth learning it, it seems like a very archaic language.

Yep I would say if you know cobol you are almost handed a blank cheque. Legacy pays.

There is even Cobol.NET would you believe that is still maintained.

It's python with an average of $100k per annum

Not sure about the highest paying language, but it seems, these days, if you have a good grasp of a programming language or two and are able to solve problems you can make decent money and have no hard time finding a job.

The highest paying does not matter. The best language is the one you feel happiest using and has the most interesting projects. Working 40+ hours a week at the code face, make sure you enjoy them!!

People pay for skills in the end and a good dev can flick between languages as they know more than one

For me i think its java

But lets be honest, considering cross platform java capabilities; its obvious.
