A Warning: Why I Don't Use Steemit

in #privacy7 years ago

The video my dad sent me:

Videos on YouTube can be put on unlisted.
That is a form of #MaidSafe.
Steemit has ZERO privacy protection.

Use it at your own risk.

Sort:

No matter where you post content on the internet, you cannot remove it with the guarantee that nobody has that content and can repost it anywhere and everywhere. Every time I post something on steemit it is within the framemind that it will be online forever.

If you are posting intimate information on YouTube and Facebook under the illusion that you can control your own privacy, realise that those platforms still have your content on their servers after you "remove" it and you've signed over the ownership of that content to them so they can do what they want with it.

That's not true, beanz.
You DO have control over who sees stuff on Facebook and YouTube. As I said, I know SOMEONE has it. That's not the point. It is ACTIONABLY private in immediate terms of social relevance. It's not ideal, but it's worlds away from how Steemit is currently. That difference makes all the difference.

So no. It matters.

I never said it doesn't matter. My point is nobody should be putting intimate information that they would want removed later on the internet. Period. At least steemit is honest about the danger. You just don't post anything you would want to remove. The same goes for other sites but the problem with them is they are fooling you into believing that content is yours to remove/hide when it isn't. Once you post it on their site you've signed over all rights. The privacy they offer you is a delusion.

While steemit is honest about the lack of privacy, those who are recommending it, such as the person my dad sent, AREN'T.

Thus my response to spotlight the issue.

I want people to stop advocating steemit as being another facebook.

It ISN'T.

And until and unless it has maidsafe features, it's technically WORSE in terms of privacy.

It's more accurate that it's moot a pertinent issue in their mind.

So I want to make a big stink about it so those being introduced are aware and don't screw themselves.

And maybe he doesn't realize it either.

It's an important topic to bring up. I believe privacy features are coming.

Privacy is coming my friend. STEEM is giving freedom of speech to the masses. It is truly bringing power back to the people. I appreciate having you here. - The STEEM blockchain is very powerful. It is also the fastest blockchain around right now. MAIDSAFE has 0 working product. We have yet to see if it will ever work.

STEEM will be implementing the Ring Confidential transactions :

Dude. Facebook is an example of MaidSafe. While the CIA can still see it, that doesn't make it less useful.

Nothing is private if you are not a private person. The difference between Facebook and steemit is that when you make content on FB, THEY make the money. On here it goes into your own wallet.

That's not the only difference.
And steemit will get better. But I want people to be aware of the current inherent dangers of treating steemit as though you could have casual conversations with friends about personal stuff and that not be a big deal, because that's what it's presented as, and that can have devastating consequences if people aren't aware. Steemit right now is NOT for intimate integrated shoot-the-shit conversation.
