US government wants access to Facebook, Apple and Google data, even if the data is stored abroad

in #privacy7 years ago

The American Supreme Court will now decide if the authorities should be able to demand disclosure of information from American companies wherever they are stored.

This quote is from an article in the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), which describes how the US government are now working towards full access to American companies' data, whether they are stored in the US or abroad.

Consider how many people across the globe who have data stored with US companies such as Facebook, Google, Snapchat and Apple. Even if these provides choose to store data abroad, the US government wants full access to the data.

Taken into account the new political landscape in the US, and the direction it seem to take, should we accept that US governments will have full access to our private data? Say the successor to Donald Trump has even more extreme political views, and maybe the successor after that, will we be comfortable with them having access to all this data?
