First attempt at 3d printing a table top miniature on my Ender 3

in #printing3d6 years ago

This is one of those "good news, bad news" things.

The good news is the Ender 3 with even a 0.4mm nozzle can print beautifully at 0.08mm layer height.

At this definition, it is difficult to see or even feel the layer lines.

Unfortunately, the bad news is the filament I used obviously needed a higher temperature to get good layer adhesion at this resolution!

Removing the supports (and there were a LOT of supports) broke the figurine in various places, making it a waste.

Took 10 hours too :O

Ah well, we live and learn!

So I will bump the nozzle temperature up to 210c and see if it helps adhesion. The risk here is that it might ooze more.

In future I will likely try a smaller nozzle size to increase resolution horizontally, while of course increasing print times even further.

While you can get better prints, faster with resin, it also costs more and means dealing with toxic goop, so I am quite pleased how this $200 machine performed!

Even more surprising, it was only after removing the print that I realized the bed had some wobble. I had to tighten the eccentric nuts. No visible layer shifts in the print though :)

Printing in PLA? What is your support angle set at? I put support around 50°. I've been printing 1:12 scale action figure accessories with decent success. Or repositioning the figure where the supports are not on detailed parts IMG_20180614_133002_972.jpg

Cool :)

I do need to look at the settings because I downloaded the FFF and printed off with only the layer height changed!

Not bad. Probably you can reduce a bit the amount of supports with those very thin layers. May be try to dry the filament, that may explain the need for higher temperature. What are your settings in the slicer ?

It was 0.08mm at 195 after the first layer, and the supports were the defaults from the basic profile so I do have some tweaking to do for sure :)

Ah ok, may be check out this video. There are links to miniature profiles:

Too bad the figurine broke :( I can almost feel your disappointment when it broke at the finishing step after 10 hours of waiting...
A tip - try spraying your next miniature with 2 or 3 layers of filler primer before sanding. It really makes sanding much easier :)
