RE: 3D Printing: Controlling the Quality, Strength, Amount of Material Used and the Cost of 3D Prints

in #printing3d8 years ago

If you take a look at my post on how to fix a broken electric car window, the problem was a 30c piece of plastic. This issue is very common in BMW cars. I had to pay $70 for a new window regulator, just because of this tiny bit of broken plastic.

I cannot wait until the day I have a 3D printer at home, and I can print out the plastic component myself.

How long until you think this will be viable? I believe it will be among such important inventions as the internet, not to mention the reduction in global oil supply via the reduction of shipping costs and so forth involved in the current model (i.e. me ordering a new part online etc).

Thanks for a great article.

Well, this is already possible, with a bit of time and effort you can quickly learn to design simpler 3D objects and there are many affordable 3D printers already available on the market. So once you get the hang of it you can be ready in no time making different small things you can then use for everyday needs, like fixing something small on a car. In fact I have already printed multiple different small parts for cars as replacement of broken or lost original parts...

You can take a look at one of my earlier posts of the series about how to try and make something yourself, you can download and check out the software I talk about there - SketchUp and just give it a try: https://steemit.com/printing3d/@cryptos/3d-printing-how-to-make-something-yourself-and-then-3d-print-it

There are also people all around the globe with 3D printers that offer 3D printing of user made models and you can either pick them up or get them sent to you (depending on the distance) or use a professional and more expensive service to get your 3D design printed even if you don't have a 3D printer at home... you just need to make something first. This is something that I’ll be covering in the upcoming posts in the series as well.
