Is Germany a gold-producing country?
The question in the title may seem absurd: where would Germany get gold? It's not the US, Australia, or Russia.
You'll be surprised, but at the end of 2021, the German Central Bank reported that the country had a reserve of 3,359 tons of gold, equivalent to 173 billion euro. This puts Germany second on the list after the United States.
Most of this gold was mined abroad: in the US, Australia, and Africa. However, Germany itself does have gold deposits of its own.
Ancient Celts and Romans searched for and found gold in Germany two thousand years ago, and in the Middle Ages gold was produced in Eisenberg near Korbach, for example.
It's not just underground mines, though: gold was also found in rivers, especially the Rhine. Now gold is a by-product of the sand and gravel production: the precious metal is separated from the grains of sand using modern technology, resulting in several kilograms of gold each year.
You could even try looking for gold on the Rhine between Waldshut and Mainz, or in the rivers of the Harz, Schwarzwald, Moselle, or the Erzgebirge mountains in Saxony. Gold is still extracted from river deposits using pans, just like during the gold rushes of 100-200 years ago.
If you're lucky, you'll find tiny gold particles in the pan. A ton of river sand yields less than a gram of gold, so gold panning is more of a hobby than an industrial enterprise.
Since the Rhine gold is so rare, it's also really in demand and used to make high-quality jewelry such as wedding rings, as well as to produce souvenirs and medals with the emblems of the respective regions. Depending on the river, its purity can be higher than 22 carats, equivalent to the so-called 916 gold (91.6 grams of pure gold per 100 grams).
