Stories like this should wake up everyone to how fragile the safeguards were in 2020.

The Atlantic has an entire issue warning of threat posed by Trump. The WAPO last week published a major opinion piece by Robert Kagan and The New Republic followed that up with a piece basically agreeing with Kagan’s warning that our “authoritarian moment” appears inevitable. The Guardian published an essay that offered similar warnings.

All this seems to coincide with Liz Cheney’s “buy my book” tour on the tv talk shows and tonight, she’s on with Rachel Maddow, sounding the alarm over Trump. So how much of this “fear porn” and the peddling of a book? I’m convinced that Trump, if he survives the coming trials in the spring, is going to get trounced in November 2024 by an even larger number than 2020. The threat comes from the GOP in the House, the malignant strain of American fascism that predates and will outlive Trump, and the damage it inflicted in Americans’ woefully uninformed understanding of how elections are conducted.

The guardrails or safeguards held up because the single most important one came through: the American voter, flaws and all, made the right choice at the ballot box in 2020 and will do so again.
