The United States will impose on Tuesday a new round of sanctions on Iran to punish its economy, months after unilaterally withdrawing from the historic agreement on the Iranian nuclear program signed in 2015.

Hours before the implementation of these measures, the Iranian president, Hasan Rohani, accused Washington of "wanting to launch a psychological war against the Iranian nation and cause dissensions" among the citizens of the country.

His US counterpart, Donald Trump, again had harsh words with Iran, while calling for negotiations with Tehran.
"The Iranian regime has a choice," Trump said in a statement. "Either it changes its threatening and destabilizing behavior and returns to the global economy, or continues on a path of economic isolation."
"I remain open to reaching a broader agreement that addresses the full range of the regime's malevolent activities, including its ballistic missile program and its support for terrorism," he added.

The first round of US sanctions, which will take effect on Tuesday at 4:01 a.m., will include blockages to financial transactions and imports of raw materials, as well as measures to prevent purchases in the automotive sector and commercial aviation.
